Is therapy right for me?

People seek out therapy for many different reasons. Therapy may help with ongoing psychological issues, such as anxiety, depression, or traumatic stress. Others may seek therapy for support during major life transitions in relationships, family, or work. Therapy is an individual choice. It is right for anyone who is motivated to work towards change in their lives and finds benefit in talking to someone about what they are experiencing. We may not be able to always change our circumstances, but we can learn to build our capacity to cope and grow through challenging times.

What is therapy like?

Every session is unique. I will often focus on the primary issues and concerns that you bring to session. Therapy can be short-term, where we focus on a specific issue, or longer term, where we address more complex issues and the patterns that manifest in your life.

Above all, you can expect a safe, nonjudgmental space to share and reflect on what is going in your life. I will offer perspectives, effective and proven techniques, and practical guidance to help you identify emotional and behavioral patterns. You should expect compassion, respect and understanding at every session.

Do you prescribe medication?

No, I am a licensed psychotherapist, and I am not a medical doctor (e.g., psychiatrist or pediatrician).  In some cases, a combination of medication and therapy is the right course of action.  Medication can target the symptoms, and psychotherapy addresses underlying contributors to emotional issues and other behaviors that may get in the way of recovery. Work with your medical doctor so you can determine what is the best treatment.

Is therapy confidential?

In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and psychotherapist. No information is disclosed without prior written permission from the client.

However, there are some exceptions required by law to this rule. Exceptions include:

  • Suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse. I am required to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.

  • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person, I am required to notify the intended victim and local authorities.

  • If a client intends to harm him/her/their self. I will make every effort to work with the individual to ensure their safety. However, if an individual does not cooperate, additional measures may need to be taken, including helping the client to seek emergency services.

Do you accept insurance?

To determine if you have mental health coverage, the first thing you should do is check with your insurance carrier. Check your coverage carefully and find the answers to the following questions:

  • What are my mental health benefits?

  • How much does my insurance pay for an out-of-network provider?

  • What is my deductible before receiving out-of-network benefits?

  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?

  • How many therapy sessions does my plan cover per year?

How much does it cost?
